Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a highly effective, non-invasive treatment used to target precancerous skin lesions caused by sun damage, known as actinic keratoses. During treatment, a light-sensitizing solution is applied to the skin and allowed to absorb before being activated with a specialized blue light. This process selectively destroys damaged cells while minimizing harm to the surrounding healthy skin.

PDT not only treats visible lesions but also addresses underlying sun damage across the treatment area, helping to improve overall skin health and reduce the risk of future skin cancers. Common treatment areas include the face, scalp, chest, forearms, and hands.

What to Expect

  • Simple In-Office Treatment: Your provider will apply the photosensitizing solution, allow it to incubate, and then activate it with blue light.
  • Temporary Redness & Peeling: The treated area may appear red, swollen, or flaky for several days as damaged cells heal.
  • Sun Protection is Essential: You must avoid direct sunlight and bright indoor light for 48 hours after treatment to prevent excessive skin reactions.
  • Healthier Skin: As your skin heals, you'll notice smoother texture and a reduction in precancerous lesions and sun-damaged skin.
